Description
Nos. 44 and 46 Fishpool Street comprise two buildings of different character, both with significant historical elements. No. 44 has a brick front dating from the late 18th century, built onto a structure originating around 1600. It is a two-storey, two-window building, topped with a high-pitched tiled roof. The first-floor windows are three-light casements, while the ground-floor window is a taller, three-light casement. The front door has been replaced. The rear elevation features a narrow gable clad in weatherboards.
No. 46 is an early 19th-century house constructed around a core dating back to circa 1600. It is a three-storey, three-window building with a red brick facade in an irregular bond pattern. The roof is slate, of medium pitch. The upper floors have blank central windows. The second-floor windows have been replaced with two-light casements. The first and ground floor windows are replaced sashes set within flush, moulded frames, with the exception of a wide, curved bow window with ten panes in four lights on the ground floor to the right. The front door is topped by a pediment-shaped hood supported by brackets. Inside, some heavy timbers are exposed, and there is a cellar with flint walls.
Nos. 24 to 46 (even) and Nos. 50 to 54 (even) combine to form a notable group. The buildings are of group value, contributing to the streetscape and providing a sense of historical continuity.
