Description

The London coal duty marker, erected between 1861 and 1862, is located on the north side of the road near the drive to Alfriston. This cast iron post, which is painted white, stands normally at one and a half metres high, although it is partially sunk into the ground. The marker features chamfered corners and roll mouldings that form a capital, which displays the City of London coat of arms on the front face. Below the coat of arms is a raised inscription that reads '25 Vict Cap. 42'. The marker was cast by Henry Grissell iron works at Regents Canal in London.
