Description
102 Wilbury Road is an Arts and Crafts style house built in 1908 by the architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin for Parker’s brother, Stanley, a craftsman joiner. It represents a significant and complete example of Parker’s best work. The house is two storeys and has attics, with steeply pitched gables that slope down to the first floor on the south side. It has three windows and features a tiled roof with tall, roughcast chimney stacks. The walls are roughcast. The windows are mullioned and precast in concrete, with leaded metal casements, displaying a design influence reminiscent of Ernest Voysey. The entrance is plain. A rear, sheltered "stoep" (a covered entrance or porch) includes a fitted settle, a feature characteristic of the “Healthy-Life” movement that was prominent in Letchworth. Originally, the interior was open-plan, with fireplace walls defining the separation between a studio and general living areas. Walls feature plain, unplastered painted brick finishes, and ceiling and roof joists are exposed. The house contains good quality joinery and ironmongery.
