Description
The stable block in Hoo Park, located to the north of the site of a demolished mansion, dates from the 18th century and is possibly the work of Sir William Chambers, who was active in the area around 1764 for Thomas Brand. The building is constructed of red brick, with some blue bricks and light red brick dressings. It features a wooden eaves cornice and a pediment, along with Portland stone imposts above the arches. The roofs are covered with slate.
The structure consists of a two-storey central block that is flanked by single-storey aisles, each with side-pediments that are interrupted by the central block. It faces east and is partly obscured by derelict buildings from a former slaughterhouse. The center of the stable block has three large round-arched double doorways designed for coaches, above which are three sash windows with 4/4 panes and flat gauged arches. Stable doors are located in the sidewalls of the aisles. The rear of the building features a projecting center with a brick-moulded pediment and three windows.
