Description
The Lytton Mausoleum in Knebworth Park, dating to 1817, was designed by J B Papworth and commissioned by Mrs E Bulwer Lytton for her mother, Elizabeth Warburton-Lytton, and her family. This small, rectangular stone mausoleum features canted angles and slightly tapering walls. The west and east walls incorporate blank doors framed by architraves, flanked by consoles, and topped with segmental pediments. Inscribed panels are present on the long elevations, and niches in the canted sides contain stone vases. The roof rises to a central podium supporting a stone sarcophagus ornamented with shell acroteria. Contemporary iron railings enclose the monument.
Within the mausoleum are the ashes of Lady Constance Bulwer-Lytton (1869-1923), a supporter of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). She participated in various suffrage activities, including demonstrations and protests, resulting in multiple arrests and periods of imprisonment. Following a period of forcibly being fed during imprisonment, she adopted a pseudonym, "Jane Warton," to participate in further protests disguised as a working-class woman. She later wrote the book, ‘Prison and Prisoners’, after suffering a stroke.
The mausoleum and its railings were enhanced in 2018 as part of the commemorations for the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act.
