Description

Wards Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse, with a northeast wing added in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with slate roofs and is set back from the road facing east. The house is in an 'L' shape, comprising a two-story main range parallel to the road and a lower two-story range extending eastwards from the northern part of the front of the house.

The main range features a large internal chimney which heats the main living room on its north side, with twin service rooms at the north end. A staircase rises on the south side of the chimney, and a parlour is located at the south end with an internal south gable chimney. A cellar is situated beneath the ground floor. Floors are framed with cross-beams. The northeast wing serves as a service wing, containing a pantry and a large kitchen with an east gable chimney. A lean-to extension is located at the east end of this wing.

The east front of the main house has two gabled dormers in the roof slope. There are two flush box sash windows with six-over-six panes on the first floor, each with a segmental arch above. Similar windows are present on the ground floor, with three-over-three large panes. A door, set in a heavy frame and raised two steps, is topped with a rectangular fanlight.
