Description
Laburnam Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century, which was enlarged in the 19th century and again in the 1980s. It features a timber frame on a brick sill that is exposed on the north end and east front, with red brick infill. The southern part has red brick casing, and there is a red brick rear wing from the 20th century. The cottage has steep thatched roofs with decorative ridges and is a 1 1/2-storey T-shaped structure facing east, with a south gable towards West Street.
The east front displays framing with three unequal bays and a staggered mid-height rail. It includes a gabled dormer, two-light casement windows, and a rectangular oriel window to the right. The north gable features jowled posts and straight tension braces to the sill. Inside, there is a clasped-purlin roof on a collar and a timber-framed rear outshut with a two-light casement window in the gable. The south gable is made of brick, with segmental arches above two two-light windows and a plaque depicting a lion rampant for the Sowerby Estate. The thatch is adorned with deep boarding bargeboards, and the entrance is located on the south side of the new rear wing.
