Description
79-80 The Green is a house, now divided into two houses, dating from the 17th century or earlier. It was refronted in brick and divided for the Sowerby estate in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame cased in red brick, topped with a very steep red tile roof, while the southern end is roughcast. The house is two storeys high with a three-cell, lobby-entry plan, facing east. It has a large internal chimney located a third of the way from the northern end, with a staircase situated behind it. There is also a later small internal chimney on the southern gable in the front slope. The eastern front has four windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor, with a door to the southern part (No. 80) positioned between two windows. A heraldic badge of a lion rampant is displayed on a 19th-century plaque. The windows include three-light casements under the eaves, two-light windows above the door by the chimney, and three-light casement windows on the ground floor, along with two plank doors. The interior features axial beams, jowled posts, and straight tension braces.
