Description

Wheat Barn is a Grade II* listed aisled barn, dating from the 14th century or earlier, with alterations made in the late 17th century and 19th century. The barn features a timber frame with a rendered brick base, and is clad in weatherboarding and red brick, topped with a slate roof.

The structure consists of six bays, with a shorter bay at the end closest to the road. The end wall facing the road is made of 17th-century brick, complete with a plinth, plat bands, and two horizontal openings along with an upper vertical oval opening. It has a brick-coped parapet with kneelers at the broad gable. The long sides of the barn have inserted windows and double doors in the second bay that faces the yard.

Inside, the barn has a large scantling frame with slightly curved braces connecting unjowled arcade posts to tie beams and arcade plates. The arcade plates feature splayed and tabled scarf joints. There are passing braces with later reinforcing braces added. Above the tie beams, struts connect to the principals, and the original design included double aisle ties clasping the wall plates, as well as corner ties at the hipped ends. A stone and brick plinth runs across the aisle to the arcade post, and the walling includes studs, braces, and a mid rail. There are 20th-century additions to the right and rear of the barn that are not of special interest.
