Description
Two barns and a linking lower building are located 70 meters southeast of Graveley Hall Farmhouse. The eastern barn dates from the 16th century, while the western barn is stylistically from the 17th century but is dated 1717. The linking building is from the 19th century. The structures have a timber frame on a tarred brick sill and are dark weatherboarded with steeply pitched roofs, which are now slated, although the western barn has a corrugated aluminum roof.
The first barn, a tall three-bay structure, is positioned to the left of the gateway to the yard in front of the house. The second barn, a tall five-bay building, is slightly northwest of the first, and there is a low open-fronted building that connects the two. All buildings face north.
The 16th-century barn features central double doors, a high single door at the rear of the middle bay, and a low external lean-to at the western end. It has jowled posts, a mid-height rail, and a clasped-purlin roof with two purlins on each slope, where the upper purlins are clasped by collars and the lower ones rest on inclined straight queen-posts with enlarged heads. The walls have long straight tension braces, and the joints include edge-halved scarf joints with bridled butts in the wallplates.
The larger barn has an inscription on a post facing the central threshing bay that reads 'JOHN/CHAKLY/MAY.I/1717', along with 'JC 1717' carved on the tie-beam. It also features a small rear outshut to the central bay, jowled posts, mid-height rails, and straight tension braces above the rail. Long straight braces extend to the tie-beams, and it has a clasped-purlin roof with the upper purlin clasped by collars and the lower clasped by inclined heavy straight queen-posts. This barn is referred to as the 'Pig Barn' and displays face-halved bladed scarf joints.
