Description

Southern Cottage is a house dating from the 16th or early 17th century, with extensions added in the late 17th or 18th century, and again in the 20th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a thatched roof. The house originally comprised three rooms, and was later extended by one bay to the left. It has one storey and an attic. The original entrance is in the left-hand bay, featuring a plank door with a tiled hood supported by timber posts. The windows are mostly 20th-century flush frame casements, with one, two, or three lights, some with leaded glass. There are two dormers with tiled sills. A stack on the right end of the house is slightly extruded. The bay added to the left has a slightly higher roof ridge and a red brick stack. The left end has an extruded stack with offsets, exposing the plates and purlins. The rear is weatherboarded. A 20th-century block with a hipped roof projects forward from the left end. A weatherboarded and tiled garage is attached to the right.
