Description

The Rose and Crown Public House is a late 15th century or early 16th century hall house featuring jettied cross wings at each end. It is constructed with a timber frame and roughcast exterior, topped with a plain tile roof. The building has two storeys, with the former service wing on the left side lacking windows. The jetty is supported by curved brackets, with the right pair possibly indicating a cross passage. The centre of the front has one glazing bar casement, while the ground floor includes a 19th century canted bay window. The right wing has a three-light casement on each floor, and the gables are adorned with 19th century cusped bargeboards. The left return elevation features an 18th century external stack and two casements. At the back, there is a long single storey extension from the 18th to 19th century, which is weatherboarded. The taller front part has an 18th century stack. Inside, the service wing retains two plain crown posts with struts to collar purlins only. The hall section has a rebated crown post with two surviving struts. The ground floor showcases a chamfer-stopped beam and a large inglenook. This building is a well-preserved example of its type.
