Description

Bury Hill Cottage is a house that dates back to the 17th century, featuring an east wing that juts out to the north. The lower hall range, which faces south, was rebuilt or refaced in brick in the early 18th century, while the crosswing has been cased in brick as well. There is a 20th-century rear extension and alterations. The cottage has a timber frame crosswing that is covered in painted red brick, which is similar to the painted brick of the hall range. It has steep old red tile roofs and is designed in a T-plan, facing south. The low hall range is 1½ stories at the back but rises to 2 stories at the front, while the east crosswing has 2 stories and attics. Inside, there is a large internal chimney located a third of the way from the east end of the hall range and a smaller chimney a third of the way from the west end. The cottage features three 3-light casement windows and a door near the middle, along with two flat-topped dormers at the rear. The crosswing includes a platband and heavy purlin-ends visible in the south gable, with a segmental head above a 3-light casement window on the first floor and a similar head above a 2-light attic window.
