Description
The North Barn at Whitehall Farm and the adjoining stable to the west are a barn and stable structure. The barn dates from the 17th century, while the stable was built in the early 18th century. The barn features a timber frame set on a low brick sill, with dark weatherboarding and a steeply pitched roof now covered in slate. It is a tall, five-bay barn facing south, with jowled posts and a mid-height rail that is jointed in-line. The barn has curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams and a clasped-purlin roof, with one purlin on each slope carried by collar trusses with queen-struts. There are heavy straight tension braces in the middle bay on the south side, with a pitching door between them and a winnowing door below. The early 18th-century stable has six bays, with heavy cambered tie-beams and inclined queen-posts that support a single purlin on each slope.
