Description

Barn and attached former cowhouse at Little Kendals Farm, built in the late 18th century, with the cowhouse constructed later and featuring subsequent alterations. The structure is timber-framed with weatherboard cladding and has plain tile roofs. The barn consists of five bays and has central opposed cart entries, while the lower, three-bay cowhouse is attached to the west end. The barn retains some old weatherboard on the south side and the two eastern bays on the north side, although doors have been removed. There is a dilapidated midstray added on the south side, and outshuts flank the cart entries on each side; those on the south side have catslide roofs, with the right (east) outshut dating to the 19th century, while the other outshuts are later and not of special interest. The cowhouse features stable doors at the centre bay on both the north and south sides, along with a small window on the west bay, and a later stable door at the west gable end.

Inside the barn, the timber frame is intact, including a sole plate, unjowelled wall posts with long slightly-curved braces to tie-beams, a queen strut to principal rafters, staggered butt purlins, and old rafters without a ridge piece. The walls have narrow panels and long raking braces, with bays 2 and 4 containing later purlins and intermediate collars that are nailed in place. The cowhouse has collared queen-strut roof trusses, through purlins, and old rafters without a ridge piece, along with later stall partitioning and board lining of the walls.
