Description
Butterfield Cottages is a pair of estate cottages built between 1878 and 1879 for H.H. Gibbs, Lord Aldenham, by the architect W. Butterfield. Located on Aldenham Road in Elstree, these cottages are constructed of brick with some stone dressings and feature applied sham timber framing on the rendered surfaces. They exhibit a Domestic Revival Style and rise to two storeys.
The cottages have central entrances, with the right entrance featuring a 20th-century porch addition. Slightly projecting wings are positioned under hipped gables. The openings are adorned with rubbed brick heads and stone hood moulds. The windows are casements, and the staircase windows have segmental heads. A hipped dormer breaks the eaves over the left entrance, while the first floor of the wings showcases sham timber framing with two tall windows. The rear stacks, located in the return angles of the wings, have stone offsets. The return and rear elevations display a burnt brick diamond pattern and continue the sham timbering from the front at the upper level. The gabled wings are finished with cusped bargeboards, and there is a central hipped dormer at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
