Description

House. The original core of Grudds Farmhouse dates to the earlier 16th century, with alterations made in the earlier 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame, now roughcast, and has an old tile roof. The house is two storeys high with two gabled attics, and features modern casement windows. The building has an L-shaped layout; the front range is three bays wide, while the western two bays have a jettied first floor supported by curved brackets. A 17th-century chimneystack is located near the western end and has attached shafts. A modern porch, half-timbered, pargetted, and tiled and set on a brick base, faces east. A 17th-century rear extension extends to the east, with a separate roof and a large chimneystack featuring diagonal mullions. The western side of the building is weatherboarded and includes a gabled dormer. Inside, the original 16th-century end bays have a two-storey layout with upper floor curved braces. The central bay has smoked rafters, and earlier 17th-century floor beams are also present. Evidence of a former moat remains.
