Description
Bramfieldbury is a house that was once three separate dwellings, dating back to the 15th century, possibly built for R. Ware, the Cellarer of St. Albans Abbey. It was floored and heated in the 17th century and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is exposed with roughcast infill and has a tiled roof. Originally, it had an open hall with a through passage and two-storey ends, all under a single roof, consisting of six bays. It is now entirely two storeys.
The entrance is located to the left of the center and features an original four-centred hollow moulded arch leading to a recess with an inner plank door. The left side has two lower end bays, while the right side contains three hall and upper end bays. Inside, there are exposed posts, a mid-rail, and studs, along with 20th-century leaded casements with one and three lights. A cross axial red brick stack has been inserted in front of the ridge to the left of the entrance, and a right end stack was added later. The gable end displays exposed framing with jowled posts, and there is a rendered stack and a 20th-century addition at the rear.
The interior includes an original screens passage and three two-centred chamfered arches, with the central arch being broader. There are stop-chamfered bearers and arched braces supporting a soot blackened roof with a braced crown post.
