Description

No. 6 Main Road is a former village school, now serving as a house and shop, built around 1850 and enlarged in 1869. The building is constructed from yellow stock brick with white brick dressings and features a thatched roof in the cottage orné style. It is one storey with an attic and has a T-shaped ridge. The front has two bays, with the left bay slightly projecting and featuring a steeply pitched gable. The ground floor includes a six-light mullion and transom hollow moulded lattice light metal casement with a chamfered white brick surround, while the first floor has similar two-light casements. The building has a pierced wavy bargeboard. The right bay contains similar two-light casements and an eyebrow thatch to the attic. There is a later porch at the centre front, which has a plank and muntin door with a four-centred arched head.

To the left of the main range, there is a cross axial stack with four chamfered shafts and a common capping. The right gable end features a porch towards the front with an entrance to the shop, a chamfered four-centred arch, and a casement towards the rear with a gauged brick flat arched head. There is also a truncated stack and wavy bargeboards. The left return has a blind horizontal panel towards the front, two-light casements, and a two-light gabled dormer with wavy bargeboards. An extruded stack towards the rear has two shafts. The rear gable end also has wavy bargeboards. Extending to the rear right is a lower addition with a slate roof and two-light small pane casements, along with further one-storey slate roofed additions. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
