Description

This is a barn located at Throcking Hall Farm, 20 meters east of the Great Barn, dating from the 18th century. It was likely built for the Elwes family before the nearby Throcking Hall was demolished in 1744. The barn features a timber frame made of pegged oak, is dark weatherboarded, and has a pitched roof that is now covered with corrugated asbestos.

The structure has three tall bays and an aisle, with an open end facing east. It is a non-traditional farm building, possibly used for overwintering cattle, and showcases an unusual plan with finely crafted oak framing in an archaic style. The arcade posts are jowled and supported by curved braces connecting to the arcade plate and tie beams. Aisle-ties are reinforced with quadrant braces. The roof is a king-post design, featuring a short, pile-shaped king-post and cleated purlins. The open end includes a central segmental-headed arched opening, flanked by square-headed side openings that also have quadrant braces. The arcade plate is joined with a face-halved bladed scarf joint.
