Description
White Cottage and Buttermilk Hall Farm is a house that has been divided into two residences. It features a 16th-century north crosswing and an open-hall range of a T-plan late medieval house. The taller southern part was rebuilt with a hall roof in the mid-19th century, and there is a 20th-century north extension. The building has a timber frame that is plastered and decorated with raised bands of painted slate, topped with old red tile roofs.
The two-storey T-plan house faces east and includes a large 17th-century central chimney located in the upper (north) bay of the hall, with a staircase behind it, likely replacing an earlier staircase. There is also a north-side external chimney made of 18th-century brickwork, which probably replaced an older stack. The southern external gable chimney serves a brick-built, plastered southern wing from the 19th century, which replaced the old service end.
The irregular eastern front features a projecting gabled north wing, a gable to the hall, and a higher southern wing that has a door leading into a cross-passage with a staircase. The conjoined diagonal shafts of the central chimney serve both the hall and the chamber above. Inside, the long cross-wing reveals exposed timber with jowled posts and an edge-halved scarf joint in the wallplate, along with bridled butts.
