Description
The Old Vicarage is a former vicarage built in 1840 for Reverend Mordaunt Barnard, who served as vicar from 1826 to 1864. This tall, isolated house features two storeys, a basement, and attics, constructed from red brick with stone and stucco dressings, topped with steep old red tile roofs. The building has an irregular cruciform plan, with a steep parapeted gable in the middle of each side. The entrance is accessed via steps leading to the south gable, where there is a four-centred arched stucco doorway with a battened door. To the left of the door is the original simple greenhouse. The house has a plinth with an offset course in yellow brick, and there is a Latin inscription on a stone set in the tall external chimney stack to the right of the entrance. The casement windows are accented with stucco surrounds and drip moulds, while a small canted bay window is located on the west side. The ground level is lower at the rear (east) side, where the windows have yellow brick surrounds and sash windows. This interesting vicarage from 1840 is situated on a prominent site above the river and is part of a group with the former Schoolhouse to the north.
