Description
A large country house dating from the early to mid-19th century, originally known as The Grange. The exterior is rendered with painted stucco and some yellow stock brick, covered by a slate roof. The building follows an L-plan with a square former stable block to the north. It has two storeys. The south-west elevation features shallow two-storey, three-window bows to the south-east and north-west, with sash windows set within architraves supported by consoles, and two bracketed gables. The interior of the south-west wing (Grange Court) on the ground floor boasts an early 19th century Adam-style ceiling and doorcases. The south-east interior (Clare Court), on the ground floor, combines a similar Adam-style ceiling and fireplace to the east with mid-19th century Tudor-style panelling and ceiling to the west. The south-east exterior (Rye Court) is characterized by a banded ground-floor rustication, gable ends with bracketed eaves, and sash windows. The north-east entrance facade is plain, featuring a square porch. Inside, a good mid-19th century staircase is lit by a rectangular skylight with art nouveau stained glass. Other interior elements include an early 19th century Adam-style ceiling and fireplace located on the rear ground floor, and an elaborate mid-19th century ceiling in a south-east room.
