Description

This is a barn located at Old Bell Yard, dating from the 16th century. It was shortened at the west end and extended to the east in the early 19th century. The barn has a timber frame that is dark weatherboarded, topped with a steep half-hipped roof now covered in corrugated iron. It is a tall, four-bay structure facing south, featuring double doors in the second bay from the west.

The older western part of the barn includes a north aisle, with very heavy jowled posts, curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams and the arcade-plate, a queen-post, and a clasped-purlin roof with old flat-laid rafters, which are separate for the aisle. There is an upcurved brace from the top of the aisle tie to the back of the arcade post. The structure of the half-hip remains visible in the roof at the eastern end. The 19th-century eastern part does not have an aisle and features unjowled posts, straight braces to the tie-beams, and a clasped-purlin roof with inclined queen-struts. This barn is an interesting example that showcases two distinct periods of construction.
