Description

A block of four houses built in 1918 by F C Eden for John Howard Carter of The Bury, as part of a picturesque scheme at The Green in Ardeley, designed to resemble Blaise Hamlet. The houses are constructed of roughcast brick with a black plinth, and have steep thatched roofs, hipped to the south and half-hipped to the north. The building forms an irregular U-shape, facing east. It has one and a half storeys, a central arched tunnel, five large square red brick chimneys, and four eyebrow dormers along the front eaves. Each side of the central arch has a small, square, tiled and weatherboarded bay window with small-paned casement windows. Oak plank doors are set within trellis porches topped with tented lead roofs. The windows are flush, two-light casements with small panes. Projecting wings are located at each end of the block. A triangular ceramic plaque above the archway reads 'H/J.C./A. 1918.D/MELIORIS AEVI'.
