Description

Brown Malting, also known as French and Jupp, is a malting building located to the south of No 3 Malting in Stanstead Abbots village. It was built in the later 19th century, around 1896. The structure is made of yellow stock brick, featuring white brick segmental arches and a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and is very wide, consisting of 11 bays with pilastered side walls and small square windows in each bay.

At the roof level on the eastern side, there is a two-storey weatherboarded lucam in the middle, along with a smaller projecting lucam at the northern gable. The southern end of the building includes a slightly lower kiln and maltstore, which features an unusual conical brick kiln that is plastered externally and has a rotating cowl. The northern end has six bays of pilastered walling, with the upper range of windows containing two-light casements and segmental white brick arches. The same brick is used for two windows and a circular opening in the gable, along with three corbelled verge courses. The interior includes cast iron columns, with timber beams and floors.

This decorative industrial building is significant in the views of the village and is of special interest due to its unusual kiln, which resembles a pottery maker's bottle kiln and is said to have been constructed by contractors from Staffordshire.
