Description

This is an 18th-century linked complex that was formerly Walnut Tree Farm. The farmhouse was refronted and extended in the early 19th century and is linked by outbuildings to a barn on the east side. The farmhouse fronts the pavement and is constructed of brick with a slate roof and a gabled form. It is two storeys high with three windows. A rear lateral chimney is located to the northeast, and an internal gable chimney to the south. The symmetrical stucco front features a parapet, corner pilasters, a plinth, a cill band to the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course. The doorway has pilaster surrounds and a block cornice. The window surrounds are eared with flat triangles above and keystones to the ground floor. The windows are sash windows with vertical margin lights, and a modern door currently occupies the opening. A single-storey yellow brick extension, with a slate roof and a late 19th-century shopfront, has been added to the south. This represents a good example of an urban farmhouse. The complex is shown on the Tithe Map of 1839.

The 18th-century barn is timber-framed, weatherboarded over a brick base. A projecting bay to the east has been reroofed. It features elm timbers and an unusual hybrid roof construction of collar and clasped purlin trusses with king posts, expanded feet halved over collars, and curved braces from unjowled posts. Originally thatched and hipped, the roof was replaced with corrugated asbestos around 1946, although the hip structure remains. It now has a gabled roof with modern wooden windows. A post is carved with the inscription ‘J..... Burton June 1812’.
