Description
No 198 is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the later 18th century. It has a timber frame resting on a brick plinth, with most of the infill being brick and plastered. The building has a steep old red tile roof that is hipped at the northern end. It is a long, two-storey structure facing east, featuring two red brick chimneys, one larger chimney located a quarter of the way from the southern end and the other a third of the way from the northern end.
The eastern front has four windows on each floor. The first-floor windows are flush box sash windows with moulded surrounds and six-over-six panes. The ground floor has flush box triple sash windows. The entrance door is centrally located and is an early 19th-century design with two vertical panels and a small rectangular fanlight above it. There are marks indicating the presence of a former porch.
The oldest features of the house can be found at the northern end, which has a deep jetty on bull-nosed joists, with a knee brace at the northeast corner. Above this area is a sash window, and below it is a four-light enlarged opening. Additionally, wooden double doors have been inserted for a garage at the northern end of the front.
