Description

HERTINGFORDBURY PANSHANGER TL 21 SE 5/68 Panshanger Stables - - II

Former stables and coachhouse to Panshanger House (demolished), with living accommodation above. c.1856 for the 7th Earl Cowper. Red brick. Hipped slate roofs. Large half H shaped block. 2 storeys. Main range is 7 bays. Ground floor: 5 double doors for coaches, outer doors with rectangular fanlights, all in relieving arches, segmental and round on outer bays. First floor central oculus, flanking four 16 pane sashes and outer smaller 8 pane sashes, all recessed with segmental heads, stone sills. Central on ridge an octagonal cupola with timber Doric columns to domed head with weathervane. Triple shafted cross-axial stacks at ends. Wings extend forward with 5 bay inner elevations. Ground floor: to right 2 stable doors with rectangular fanlights, central and outer 16 pane sashes all with round headed surrounds. To left, similar with 3 doors, 2 windows. First floor 8:4 pane sashes with segmental heads. End stacks. Blind openings on front ends with outer pilaster strips. Outer elevations have scattered openings and an added stack. 7 bays to rear with a ground floor lean-to addition. Interior: stalls have tiled backs, iron posts. (Pevsner 1977).
