Description
Panshanger Stables, built around 1856 for the 7th Earl Cowper, served as the former stables and coachhouse for the now-demolished Panshanger House. The building is constructed of red brick and features hipped slate roofs, forming a large half H-shaped block with two storeys. The main range consists of seven bays.
On the ground floor, there are five double doors for coaches, with outer doors that have rectangular fanlights, all set in relieving arches that are segmental and round on the outer bays. The first floor has a central oculus, flanked by four 16-pane sash windows and smaller outer 8-pane sashes, all recessed with segmental heads and stone sills. At the top of the ridge, there is an octagonal cupola supported by timber Doric columns leading to a domed head with a weathervane. The ends of the building feature triple shafted cross-axial stacks.
The wings extend forward and have five bay inner elevations. On the right side of the ground floor, there are two stable doors with rectangular fanlights, alongside central and outer 16-pane sashes, all with round-headed surrounds. The left side mirrors this with three doors and two windows. The first floor has 8:4 pane sashes with segmental heads and end stacks. The front ends have blind openings with outer pilaster strips, while the outer elevations display scattered openings and an added stack. The rear has seven bays and a ground floor lean-to addition. Inside, the stalls feature tiled backs and iron posts.
