Description
This wooden monument is located in the churchyard at the Old Church of St James, 10 metres west of the tower. It dates from the 18th century and is designed in the form of a graveboard. The inscription on the monument is illegible due to weathering. The structure is made of weathered oak timbers and consists of a long horizontal beam that has a fragmentary painted inscription. This beam is protected by a weathered capping and is tenoned into decorative square posts at each end. The joints are pegged and covered by mouldings. Each post is moulded, waisted, and topped with a tall pyramid shape. This monument is an interesting example of a type that was once widely used.
