Description

House. Built around 1700. The main part of the house is of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with darker bricks used decoratively on the front elevation. A rear service wing is timber framed and plastered. The house has steep, old red tile roofs and is arranged in an L-shape, facing east. It is two storeys high with attics.

The symmetrical front range has three panes wide. The roof bellcast to the eaves with a wooden cornice, breaking forward at the ends and over a central brick panel with pilasters. There are two windows on each side of the front elevation on each floor. The windows are flush box sashes with gauged flat arches, moulded architraves and 6/6 panes. A plinth and moulded floorband run around the house. The central front door is six-panelled, raised and fielded, with a matching overdoor set in a wooden doorcase recessed within a surround of fluted pilasters, paired panelled brackets, and a moulded flat hood. Internal gable chimneys are present. Moulded brick corbels support kneelers for the brick gable parapets. Four small openings are present in the south gable.

A lower, two-storey brick kitchen wing is located to the rear and features a large gable chimney. A stair tower is situated in the rear angle. The interior is notable for raised and fielded panelled rooms on the ground floor, and dado panelling and moulded cornices on the first floor. A moulded closed string staircase with fat turned balusters and moulded newel offsets, carved from solid wood, rises through three floors. Two-panel raised and fielded doors are used throughout. A bolection moulded fire surround is located in the north room on the first floor. The property was formerly named Walkern Place.
