Description

Walkern Free Church, also known as the United Reformed Methodist Church, is a chapel built in 1811, originally as a Congregational chapel. The building features stucco on brick, designed to resemble ashlar, and has slate roofs. It is a small rectangular chapel oriented east-west, set back from the road and surrounded by its graveyard. The entrance is located in the middle of the west end, which has a round-headed window framed in cast iron with small panes positioned above the central rectangular recessed entrance. The door has a fluted surround with lozenge-decorated corner blocks and a small rectangular fanlight between shaped brackets that support a flat hood. The panelled door has been renewed.

On each side of the chapel, there are pointed large cast iron windows with margin lights and small panes, while two similar windows are located at the east end, framing the pine pulpit-back with a pointed arch. The interior features a pine dado and bench seating, maintaining a simple design. The vestry, which has a lower gabled structure with an external gable chimney projecting at the southeast, is accessed from the west and contains a four-panel flush-beaded door. To the right of the vestry is a smaller cast iron pointed window with lattice panes and margin lights. This chapel remains largely unchanged since the early 19th century.
