Description

The Lady Sarah Cowper Tomb is a sarcophagus located in St Mary's Churchyard, dating from 1719. It is made of grey marble and sits on a stepped base of Portland stone with pedestal feet. The tomb features coved sides adorned with inscribed tablets, a bold cavetto and scroll moulded cornice, and a low pyramidal cap. Lady Sarah Cowper was the widow of William Cowper of Hertford Castle and the mother of William, the first Earl Cowper, who served as Lord Chancellor to George I. The tomb is positioned east of the east end of the church.
