Description
St Joseph's Lodge and gateway is a lodge and gateway built in the early 20th century, with an extension added in the 1980s. The structure is made of red brick in stretcher bond, topped with old tiled roofs featuring Dutch gables and stone copings. It has a brick chimneystack with four low octagonal shafted moulded brick flues and is designed in a Jacobean style.
The lodge is two storeys high. The front elevation features a three-light window on the first floor, which has moulded brick mullions, iron casements with lattice leaded glazing, a splayed brick sill, and a moulded brick dripmould. The Dutch gable above includes stone kneelers, moulded copings, and a ball finial on a pedestal, along with a moulded band at the first-floor level. The ground floor has a projecting semicircular bay with five lattice glazed lights, a corbelled cornice, and a parapet with brick balusters and inner moulded lozenges.
On the north flank elevation, there is a projecting Dutch gable and a lean-to porch, while the south elevation features a Dutch-gabled dormer and both three-light and two-light windows. The building was extended eastwards by one bay in the 1980s, with the original Dutch gable reset.
The gateway consists of substantial red brick piers in Flemish bond, topped with stone caps and ball finials, and features elaborate scrollwork wrought-iron gates. This building is an important part of the setting of St Mary's Church and its churchyard.
