Description
The Pauline Payne Whitney Paget Memorial, located in St Mary's Churchyard in Hertford, was created around 1920 to honor Pauline Payne Whitney Paget. It is made of Portland stone and features red brick dwarf walls with stone coping. The memorial includes a sculpture of the Virgin Mary and Child, accompanied by the infant St John, beneath a canopy supported by two Tuscan Doric columns. The frieze is inscribed with the words 'Pro patria', and there is a cornice hood with moulded brackets.
Curved screens with Tuscan antae, a frieze, and coping surround the memorial, which also has a wrought-iron screen with a roundel. The plinth of the sculpture bears the inscription 'To the memory of Almeric Hugh Paget, first Baron Queenborough, 1861-1949'. A stepped forecourt leads to the memorial, defined by brick dwarf walls. Inset stone tablets record details about Pauline Payne Whitney Paget, who was the daughter of William Collins Whitney, a former secretary of the US Navy, and that Almeric Hugh Paget placed the memorial in her memory.
Additionally, lead figures of soldiers and sailors from the First World War are set into the limestone slab in front of the sculpture, with the inscription 'PAVLINE' in Roman capitals. The artist responsible for this significant memorial has not been identified. It is noted that Pauline Payne Whitney Paget died due to her voluntary work during the war. Her daughter, Dorothy Paget, became well-known as a racehorse owner and is buried nearby. The memorial is situated in the southeast corner of the churchyard.
