Description
Aspenden Bridge is a road bridge over the River Rib, built in 1878 through private subscription, as indicated by a plaque on the southeast parapet wall that reads 'ASPENDEN BRIDGE/BUILT BY/PRIVATE SUBSCRIPTION/AD1878/W WATSON ESQ.' The bridge features red brick abutments that support parallel iron I-beams, which form the deck and are complemented by jack arches and tie-rods between the beams. It has a four-bay trellis open work iron balustrade, with short brick parapet walls over the abutments, finished with blue brick and stone copings. The projecting ramped wing walls along the sides of the river are made of red brick and were rebuilt around 1983. Additionally, there is a large cast iron plaque on the northeast parapet that indicates a weight restriction by the County Council, dated 1899, with the number '256'.
