Description

The Fox Public House is a building that dates from the late 17th century and was renovated in the early 19th century. Originally auctioned as The Fox Beershop in 1871, it features a timber frame that is roughcast with a weatherboarded apron at the front and a steeply pitched roof that is now covered with slate. The structure is two stories high with a three-cell, central-chimney plan, facing north. At the rear, there is a two-story outshut with a catslide roof and a single-story further outshut at the southwest, also under a catslide.

At the west end, there is a long single-story range that was formerly used for stabling, which is weatherboarded and has a red pantiled roof that projects significantly at the front. An external gable chimney was added in the 18th century to an unheated west room. The front elevation has three windows on each floor, along with a small window in front of the central chimney. There are two doors: the right-hand door is a six-panel raised and fielded door with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets, while the left-hand door is a four-panel flush-beaded door set in a moulded architrave and features a gabled timber porch.

Inside, the building has exposed timbers, with axial beams in the eastern parlour and hall, while the narrow west room, now part of the bar, has axial joists. There are two large open fireplaces made of narrow bricks, each with timber lintels and stepped-headed niches. The accommodation in 1871 included a parlour, taproom, kitchen, storeroom, cellar, and four bedrooms.
