Description
Numbers 14 (Alms Cottages) and 15 to 18 on Cambridge Road are two adjoining blocks of houses built in the late 18th century. They are constructed of grey and yellow brick, featuring a low plastered plinth and old red tile roofs, with the northern block having a hipped end. The buildings are two stories tall, with one window on each floor for each house, and the doors are positioned away from the fireplace and chimney stack. Each house has three-light wooden casement windows set under segmental arches on both floors, and flat door hoods supported by shaped brackets. Number 14, located at the lower end of the slope, originally served as almshouses founded in 1794 for four widows, but it has since been converted into two dwellings with a shared entrance door. This unit projects slightly ahead of the northern block. The lower windows of Number 14 are two-light small paned cast iron casements, and it features a four-panel flush beaded door with a flat hood on shaped brackets adorned with guttae at the springing. Numbers 15 to 18 consist of pairs of houses with large shared chimneys and are likely built slightly later than Number 14; they are included for their group value.
