Description
Culver Lodge is a house that likely originated in the 18th century, with an extension added to the north in the early 19th century. The entire building was completely refaced in the late 19th century. It features a stucco exterior and an old tile roof. The main block, located to the south, is two storeys high and has three horizontal sash windows, with segmental headed dormers behind a part-balustraded parapet. The five-window front includes rusticated end pilasters and a moulded cornice, with all windows set in rusticated surrounds. Most windows are 4/4 sashes, except for those on the first floor of the south side.
There is a square central porch with arched side doors, which connects to a modern glazed corridor leading to a rusticated Tuscan gate, flanked by side walls with rusticated end piers. The projecting northern extension is also two storeys high and has four windows, linked to the main block by a one-window link that contains a 10/10 sash window lighting the staircase. This extension features rusticated corners and window jambs, with moulded window cornices supported by carved consoles. A half-glazed corridor with a tiled roof leads to the road entrance in the wall.
The rear elevation of the main block is particularly notable, displaying four windows with outer ground floor triple-hung sashes and a central pair of 6/9 sashes that reach down to floor level. The first floor has 10/10 and 6/6 sashes, along with four segmental headed casement dormers. Inside, the house features good early 19th-century cornicing, especially in the northern ground floor area, and there is a contemporary wrought iron conservatory on the south side. The northern section includes a niche-ended staircase hall.
