12/17 Cathrow monument in churchyard 20 metres east-south-east of chancel

GV II

A large churchyard monument. Circa 1800. Stone with cast iron railings. A fine neo-classical mausoleum in the form of a square temple with low pitched roof, pediments on each side, a large mantled lamp on top, withered foliage carved in each tympanuam, a square base of 4 steps, and 4 baseless Tuscan columns standing on the 3rd step. Inside: a flared square sarcophagus with stepped lid, accroteria, lion's feet, and simple bordered panels. On W face: 'The family vault of George Cathrow Esq of Hoddesdon.' The lowest step carries high cast iron railings with square bars and points alternating in base panel, and spears with spikes between above. 4 heavy corner standards with reversed flambeau in relief and elongated amphorae as finials. An important neo- classical monument. Part of the churchyard group. (Pevsner (1977) 150).
