Description
The Cathrow monument, located in the churchyard 20 metres east-south-east of the chancel in Great Amwell village, is a large churchyard monument dating from around 1800. It is made of stone and features cast iron railings. This fine neo-classical mausoleum is designed as a square temple with a low pitched roof and pediments on each side. Atop the structure is a large mantled lamp, and each tympanum is adorned with carved withered foliage. The monument stands on a square base with four steps, and it is supported by four baseless Tuscan columns that rise from the third step.
Inside, there is a flared square sarcophagus with a stepped lid, decorated with accroteria, lion's feet, and simple bordered panels. The west face of the monument bears the inscription: 'The family vault of George Cathrow Esq of Hoddesdon.' The lowest step is surrounded by high cast iron railings featuring square bars and points in the base panel, with spears and spikes above. The corners are marked by four heavy standards with reversed flambeau reliefs and elongated amphorae as finials. This monument is an important example of neo-classical design and is part of the churchyard group.
