Description

Brent Pelham Hall, along with its gate piers and boundary wall, dates from the 16th to 17th century, with a stone reportedly dated 1608. The original structure was timber framed but was encased in brick in the late 17th century, resulting in a striking red brick south front. The building features slightly projecting wings at each end with hipped gables, and the central three-bay section is set forward under a pediment that has a blocked oval light. A wood modillioned eaves cornice runs around the pediment. The façade includes a window arrangement of double-hung sashes with glazing bars in a 2:1:3:1:2 pattern, a plain band, and a central brick entrance porch topped with a modillioned cornice and a broken pediment head. The hall is two stories tall with attics, and the east and west wings each have three hipped dormers. There are three notable chimney stacks: one on the north side with two octagonal shafts, another from the former hall featuring two shafts with carved brickwork in 'garland' and 'fish scale' patterns, both dating from the 17th century, and the south wing stack, which has four grouped octagonal shafts. Inside, there is 17th-century panelling and fireplaces, including one in the hall made of stone from the 16th century. Other fireplaces and panelling were relocated from 'Beeches' earlier in this century. The boundary wall is made of fine brickwork, with the entrance piers included, although part of the wall along the south-western boundary has been reduced in height.
