Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church built in the mid-14th century, constructed from flint rubble. It features a west tower added in the mid-15th century, which has three stages, an embattled parapet, and a small spire. The church underwent significant restoration in the 19th century, during which the south porch was rebuilt, a north organ chamber was added, and most of the windows were renewed. The north and south doorways are original, with the south door showcasing some fine 14th-century tracery. The interior is lofty, although many fittings were removed during the restoration. Remaining features include part of the chancel screen incorporated into the modern tower screen, an unusual 13th-century black marble slab in a tomb recess with a foliated cross and symbols of the Four Evangelists in high relief, and an early 17th-century brass commemorating the two wives of Francis Rowley.
