Description
The walled forecourt and garden walls at Westfield date from the late 17th century or early 18th century. They are constructed of high red brick in Flemish bond, enclosing a courtyard that serves as the formal approach to the house from the avenue to the east. The walls feature heavy sloping brick capping on projecting courses and shallow buttresses at intervals. The eastern wall extends to enclose a walled garden on the south side of the house, which measures about 30 square meters. Taller, panelled square brick piers with moulded brick caps flank the eastern entrance to the forecourt, and one similar pier remains in the southern gateway into the garden. In the early 20th century, tall piers and cast iron floral double gates were added to the northern wall of the forecourt. These walls are essential to the setting of Westfield and the formal cruciform layout of the walled garden is depicted in a 1767 plan of Westfield Farm.
