Description
6A and 8 The Wash is a house that has been converted into a shop with offices above, with the first and second floors numbered 6A and accessible through the adjoining No. 6. The building dates from the late 16th century and has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features a plastered Welsh slated gambrel roof and has casement windows on the front gable, which juts out slightly from the facade.
The exterior consists of three storeys and attics, with the gable end facing the street. The first floor has a flush timber south window with glazing bars, which appears to have replaced a three-light mullion and transom casement. The second floor features a slightly recessed timber sash window with glazing bars. The ground floor has a plain 20th-century timber shopfront with plate glass windows, set in front of the jetty, where a bressumer is visible.
Inside, the building has been much altered, but the post and beam structure, along with mortices for a missing brace on the first floor, suggests it was originally a late 16th-century structure of two bays, possibly a cross wing, which was extended to the rear and heightened in the 18th century when the gambrel roof was formed.
