Description

9 and 9A Maidenhead Street is a house that has been converted into a ground floor shop with offices above. It dates from the 17th century and was altered in the 18th century, with the shopfront created in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame, is covered in stucco, has an old tiled roof, and a tall yellow grey gault brick chimney stack on the far left front. It has a two-bay, two-cell plan.

The exterior consists of three storeys and attics. The first floor has a flush-set 12-pane sash window on the left and a triple-light 4:12:4-pane sash window on the right. The second floor has three 12-pane sash windows. There is a cavetto moulded wood cornice at the first-floor level, with modern shopfronts below, including a return along the right-hand (west) side facing Honey Lane. Above this is a blank plastered elevation and gable. The roof features two gabled casement dormers.

Inside, the ground floor has been gutted for the shop. Access to the first floor is from a street door on the left, leading to a tight newel and winder staircase located in the rear left (south-east) corner. Each upper floor has two rooms; the right-hand room on the first floor has 18th-century panelling with quadrant moulding, a moulded dado rail, a panelled dado, and a 19th-century black marble fireplace surround with a cast-iron arched grate. The right-hand room on the second floor features an 18th-century wood cornice and exposed studwork. There is no access to the roof structure where the attics are located.
