Description

This is a pair of mid-to-late 19th century houses, now incorporating shops on the ground floor and offices above, located on Maidenhead Street, Hertford. The buildings are constructed of yellow-grey gault brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco dressings and a Welsh slated roof. A prominent cornice with moulded stucco consoles runs along the top of the building.

The exterior is three stories high with three bays. The first and second floors feature three projecting oriel bays that extend through both floors. These bays have timber triple sash windows with divided glazing and plain-glazed sidelights, all topped with moulded wooden cornices. The spandrels above the first-floor window heads are plastered. Hipped slate roofs sit above the second floor. The corners of the building are defined by rusticated stucco quoins. Two 20th-century shopfronts occupy the ground floor.

The interior of the buildings has not been inspected. The buildings are listed as part of a significant group that contributes to the street’s overall appearance.
