Description
33 Amwell End is a commercial building located in Ware, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It incorporates remnants of an earlier timber-framed structure and features alterations from the 1980s. The building is constructed of yellow-grey brick in Flemish bond, with a stucco-faced ground floor. It has a moulded wood eaves cornice and a hipped roof covered with Welsh slate, featuring lead roll hips. The yellow-grey brick chimneystacks have oversailing courses and three tapered square pots.
On the first and second floors, there are two sash windows set back in reveals under rubbed flat arches, with small paned glazing. The shopfront, altered in the 19th century, includes a flat projecting canopy above that is partly supported by reused timber beams and was formerly adorned with iron railings. This building housed a butchery from 1835 until the 1980s, and the long rear extension contained a slaughterhouse. It is included for its group value.
