Description
This is a block of six houses on High Street in Hunsdon village. They were built in the mid-19th century, likely for Edmund Calvert, and were initially part of a symmetrical, E-shaped terrace of estate houses. The left-hand cross wing was later rebuilt following a fire. The houses are timber-framed and have been plastered, with steep gabled roofs covered in old red tiles. They are generally one and a half storeys high, with a gabled dormer window above the front room of each house. The central and northern ends feature projecting gabled houses, each with a window centrally placed on both floors. The windows are flush boxed sashes with moulded architraves and 4/8 panes. A plank door with a moulded architrave is located to the left of the central gable's window, while the northern cross wing has a side entrance sheltered by a steep tiled lean-to porch. This porch has a cusped bargeboard that matches the bargeboards on all the gables and dormers. The houses have three large square red brick chimneys, each with eight flues. Lower, two-storey pitched roof extensions are located at the rear, housing bathrooms. The buildings represent a picturesque group of 19th-century Gothic estate houses with few alterations and are an important feature of the village Conservation Area, particularly around the Village Hall.
