Description
The Waggon and Horses is an early to mid-17th century public house, potentially with earlier origins, and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of timber frame, now rendered, with a red brick stack. The roof is tiled, with some slates to the rear. The building has a "L" shaped plan, comprising two bays by two bays.
The section facing the High Street is lower and likely the earlier part of the building, having been raised to the front. The ground floor has two recessed plank doors with moulded frames at each end. A dual-glazed bar sash window sits to the left of centre, within a flush moulded frame. Above are two first-floor windows, each a three-light small pane casement in a flush frame. A multiform rendered stack is positioned in front of the ridge to the right of centre. The taller, more recent range has a hipped roof to its return. The ground floor has a glazed bar sash, and to the right are two three-light small pane casements, all within flush frames.
To the rear gable end is an early brick stack addition, originally in English bond, slightly buttressed to the front, and with a rebuilt stock brick shaft. A blocked segmental headed opening is also present. Behind this wing is a 19th-century lean-to outshut, covered by a catslide roof. The High Street range has a steeper roof pitch to the rear. A hipped slate-roofed lean-to outshut extends to the left, featuring a small flush-frame sash window to the front and rear.
Inside, the public house has shaped jowled posts, tension braces, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The first floor was not inspected during the listing process.
