Description
Nos. 87, 89, and 89A on High Street in Watton-at-Stone is a shop that originated as a house, which has been extended and is now comprised of two dwellings and a shop. The building dates from the early to mid-16th century and was likely floored and heated in the late 16th or early 17th century. It was further extended at the rear in the 19th century. The structure features a timber frame with pargetted rendering and a stock brick addition, topped with tiled roofs, including machine tiles at the rear.
Originally, the building had an open hall with a projecting lower cross wing, which is now a single storey with an attic. At the upper end, there is a two-storey jettied block. The entrance, located to the right of the hall range, has a fanlight above it. The ground floor features a four-light small pane flush frame casement with a hoodboard, while above this is a later three-light casement set in a gabled dormer. A ridge stack has been inserted at the lower end of the hall, with its cap rebuilt.
The lower cross wing projects to the right and has a lower ridge. It was originally jettied at the front and is now underbuilt in stock brick, featuring a small pane shop window with an entrance to the left. The first floor has a two-light casement, with exposed plates and purlins. To the left is a taller two-cell addition, which has stone steps leading up to a four-panelled door with a fanlight and architrave positioned to the right of centre, flanked by two-light casements. The first floor jetties on curved brackets, with one cut and two removed, and includes two and three-light casements.
On the left end, there is a 17th-century external stack that is multiform with offsets. The ground floor has a stock brick casing with a two-light casement, while the first floor features single lights and exposed purlins. The rear of the hall and the later block includes a 19th-century stock brick continuous lean-to outshut with a catslide roof. The right end has a low 19th-century lean-to outshut with an entrance at the front and a three-light casement above in the right return. The interior has not been inspected.
